What to Expect + Preparing for Class

WHAT TO EXPECT: Classes for babies and toddlers are supposed to be fun, flexible, playful, and somewhat unpredictable! First and foremost, we'll begin with the understanding that anything can happen: spit-up, cries, babbling, stinky diapers, etc! We want you to know that you and your child are accepted just as you are, and you are free to accommodate as you need to in order to keep the peace - this means leaving the room if needed, without worry that you're disrupting the flow of class.

The goal is to introduce gentle movement and breath to your kiddo while giving you a chance, as the caregiver, to enjoy a little bit of self-care in the company of your favorite little person. Expect a healthy mix of repetition in the form of songs, rhymes, breathwork and yoga asana (poses) to complete our 40-45 minute class. Some poses will be seated, others will be standing while holding baby! There will be a little bit of strengthening work added in, particularly for the abdominals, back, and shoulders. For this reason, we ask that if you are a postpartum mother, you have been approved for movement by your physician at your six-week checkup.

WHAT TO BRING: Dress yourself and your mini in comfortable clothing that allows for a wide range of motion in your shoulders and hips. Bring your arsenal of baby things that allow you to feel like you've got everything you need to leave the house - this includes a bottle of water! Props will be available in class.

WHY CAP IT AT 18 MONTHS? Current classes are capped at 18 months for a few reasons, but mostly it is because the idea is that once your toddler hits that age - they are ready and capable to participate on a more individual level in a yoga class, versus being held by their caregiver. Toddlers above 18 months are able to mirror simple poses and most are able to take directions, which is an entirely different class experience. Not to mention - the bigger they are, the heavier they get, and there is a wide range of 'normal'! It might make standing poses that involve holding your babe more challenging if your child is too big. It is very possible that classes for 18 months and up will be available in the near future. Stay tuned!
